Hannah-Espia

Hannah Espia (b. 1987) is a director, writer, producer, and editor from Manila, Philippines. A graduate of the University of the Philippines Film Institute, she began her career in the Philippine film industry as an editor before venturing into directing and producing. Espia’s debut feature film Transit, was one of the most acclaimed Filipino films in 2013. Premiering at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival in July 2013 where it won ten awards including Best Picture and Best Director, the film would go on to receive a Special Mention at the Busan International Film Festival and the Student Jury Prize at Tokyo FilmEx. Hailed as an “impressive debut” by Variety film magazine, the film has been selected to over 50 international film festivals and was the Philippines’ entry to the 86th Academy Awards. In 2014, Espia won the prestigious Gawad Urian Award for Best Director, making her only the third female director to receive this honor in the Urian’s 39 years.
