Anna Isabelle Matutina

Anna Isabelle Matutina is a graduate of the University of the Philippines, Diliman and the Mowelfund Film Institute. Her work with short films started in 2004 and her works have been screened both locally nd abroad. She also worked for two of the biggest networks in the country, ABS-CBN and GMA Network. She also won awards for editing independent films.

She currently works as a director and also an editor for a documentary show, I-Witness, and still works on independent films. She has recently finished her first independent documentary, Magdalena, which was produced under the Franco-German-Filipino Documentary Workshop.

Plot

The story of Claire – wife to a loving husband, mother to two lovely kids, and she has never had an orgasm. Embarrassment, guilt, and a fear of her own desires have made her sexual relationship with her husband a constant struggle. These days, Claire’s only relief is being back in the workforce after having been a housewife for years. Until one day, Claire suddenly finds herself pregnant again. Coupled with her unfulfilled desires as a woman, Claire’s fear of going back to the life she had before leads her to desperately find a moment of freedom from the role she cannot escape.

Plot

“Magdalena” follows the life of a traditional midwife as she struggles to make ends meet to care for her only daughter, Margie, who is afflicted with leukemia. Unsatisfied by the care provided by hospitals and modern medicine, Magdalena turns to faith healers and unorthodox religious practices to help her daughter. But now that Margie is pregnant, can Magdalena put her faith back on modern medicine and entrust her daughter to the care of doctors?
